Stack Position
The stack position is a guard-passing technique in which the top player stacks the opponent’s hips and legs toward their chest, neutralizing the bottom player’s ability to generate leverage for sweeps or submissions. It is commonly used against closed guard or leg entanglements, allowing the passer to apply pressure while moving toward dominant positions such as side control or mount.
This position requires careful weight distribution to prevent counters, as an improperly stacked opponent can reverse or submit the top player. The stack is both a defensive and offensive tool, controlling dangerous submissions while setting up chokes, armbars, or positional advancements.
Competitors often combine the stack with hand-fighting, posture control, and precise timing to force the opponent into disadvantageous positions. Its effectiveness in sport BJJ, MMA, and submission-only formats highlights its utility as a control-based strategy for overcoming strong guards.
