Half Guard

Half guard is a fundamental position in BJJ where the bottom player traps one of the opponent’s legs between their own. This position allows for defensive stability while creating opportunities to sweep, submit, or transition to full guard or other advanced positions.

Half guard variations include deep half, lockdown, and knee shield, each offering different leverage and control strategies. Key principles involve hip movement, underhook usage, and weight distribution to destabilize the top player while maintaining personal safety.

Half guard is a cornerstone of both gi and no-gi strategy. Its widespread use in competition reflects its versatility, offering both offensive and defensive options for grapplers of all levels.
