Lasso Guard
Lasso guard is a sophisticated variation of spider guard in which the practitioner wraps one leg around the opponent’s arm, creating a lasso-like entanglement. This leg positioning restricts the opponent’s mobility, making it difficult for them to posture or pass the guard. The bottom player can use the lasso to manipulate balance, set up sweeps, or transition into submissions like triangles or armbars.
The lasso guard is particularly effective in gi BJJ because the laced grips on the sleeve and pant allow for additional control and leverage. It also forces the top player to devote significant energy to freeing the trapped arm, giving the bottom player openings for offensive attacks.
Mastery of the lasso guard requires flexibility, timing, and a deep understanding of leverage. High-level competitors often chain it with other spider guard variations, creating dynamic systems of control that keep the opponent off-balance and reactive.
