Closed Guard
Closed guard is one of the most fundamental positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where the bottom player locks their legs around the opponent’s waist, controlling posture and limiting mobility. This position provides a platform for submissions like armbars, triangles, and collar chokes.
It is a versatile defensive and offensive position, allowing the bottom player to dictate pace and transitions while maintaining safety. Effective closed guard depends on posture, hip movement, and grip control.
Beyond submissions, closed guard is a teaching staple for beginners, introducing concepts of leverage, base, and defensive positioning in BJJ’s core curriculum.
