North-South Position

North-south is a top control position where the practitioner’s head is over the opponent’s chest or hips, facing their legs. This position limits the bottom player’s mobility, allowing the top player to apply pressure, secure transitions, and prepare submissions.

It is a versatile platform for attacks like the north-south choke, kimura, or transitions to mount or side control. Successful control relies on hip pressure, shoulder positioning, and constant adjustment to the opponent’s movements.

North-south embodies the BJJ principle of positional hierarchy: controlling an opponent from a dominant angle while maintaining readiness to attack or transition, maximizing both defense and offensive potential.
