Back Control

Back control is a dominant position where the practitioner secures hooks with the legs while controlling the opponent’s upper body, often using a seatbelt grip or collar-and-sleeve grips in gi competition. The position offers the highest probability for submission finishes while minimizing the risk of counters.

From back control, common attacks include rear-naked chokes, collar chokes, and body triangles that immobilize the opponent. Maintaining chest-to-back contact, controlling the hips, and securing proper hooks are critical for sustaining dominance.

Back control is universally recognized as one of the most decisive positions in BJJ. It emphasizes leverage, positional strategy, and control, demonstrating the principle of using technique over brute strength.
