Side Control
Side control, or side mount, is a dominant position where the practitioner pins the opponent from the top across their torso, controlling their hips and shoulders. It is a foundational control position in both gi and no-gi BJJ, allowing the top player to maintain pressure, restrict movement, and prepare submissions.
Side control offers multiple offensive avenues, including kimuras, americana, chokes, and transitions to mount or back control. Proper weight distribution, shoulder pressure, and hip positioning are critical to prevent escapes and maintain dominance.
Mastering side control is essential for competitive success, as it teaches positional hierarchy and reinforces the BJJ principle that control is a prerequisite for effective offense. Variations like kesa-gatame, north-south side control, and modified scarf hold expand its utility.
