Butterfly Half Guard

Butterfly half guard combines elements of butterfly guard hooks with half guard control of one of the opponent’s legs. This hybrid position allows the bottom player to create sweeping opportunities while maintaining defensive stability.

It is particularly useful for transitioning between open guard variations or setting up submissions like kimuras, guillotines, and sweeps to dominant positions. By controlling the opponent’s weight and base, the practitioner can manipulate balance and pressure for tactical advantage.

The position requires fluid movement, awareness of grips, and adaptability. Its rise reflects the integration of hybrid guard concepts in modern competitive BJJ.
