Rear Naked Choke

The rear naked choke (RNC) is one of the most iconic submissions in BJJ, applied from back control to compress the carotid arteries. By wrapping an arm around the opponent’s neck and securing it with the opposite arm or hand, the attacker creates a tight choke that can end fights quickly and safely if applied correctly. It is a staple in both gi and no-gi BJJ, as well as MMA.

Back control is critical for the choke’s success, with the attacker’s hooks and chest-to-back connection preventing escape. The RNC’s versatility allows it to function both as a finishing technique and a positional threat, forcing opponents to defend while the attacker maintains dominance. Advanced variations include body triangle integration, arm positioning adjustments, and setup transitions from other submissions.
