Cross Collar Choke
The cross collar choke is a classic gi submission where both hands grip the opponent’s collar in a figure-four configuration to compress the neck and restrict blood flow. From closed guard, it is particularly effective as the attacker can control posture while applying gradual pressure.
Execution relies on proper angles and tight lapel control, using arms and shoulders to apply pressure without brute strength. Adjusting hip position increases leverage, making it highly effective even against resisting opponents.
Beyond submitting the opponent, cross collar chokes serve as a positional tool: they can force the opponent to open their guard, enabling sweeps, armbar setups, or transitions to mounted attacks. Its versatility makes it a staple in gi-focused BJJ competition.
