Estima Lock
The Estima lock is a foot lock targeting the ankle and Achilles tendon, usually applied from guard or top control. It is named after the Estima family, who popularized this submission in competitive grappling circles. By controlling the opponent’s foot and ankle and applying rotational or compressive pressure, the attacker forces a tap while limiting escape options.
Unlike traditional straight ankle locks, the Estima lock can be used in dynamic guard situations or as a counter to leg entanglements. Body positioning, grip, and leverage are critical to avoid injury and ensure the lock is secure.
Competitors often integrate the Estima lock into leg-lock chains, transitioning to toe holds, inside or outside heel hooks, or sweeping attempts if the initial attack is defended. Its innovation and precision highlight the evolution of leg attacks in modern BJJ.
