The First BJJ Instructional Book
One of the earliest instructional books on BJJ was Gracie Jiu-Jitsu by Hélio Gracie, published in the mid-20th century. This book laid out the foundations of the system, with photographs and explanations of techniques focused on self-defense. It was a rare resource at a time when BJJ knowledge was closely guarded and passed down primarily through direct instruction.
The book helped spread awareness of the art beyond Brazil, providing a glimpse into the Gracie system for those unable to train in person. Later publications would expand on this model, but Hélio’s work remains a historic marker in the documentation of BJJ.
