BJJ in Law Enforcement

Police departments worldwide have adopted Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as part of defensive tactics training. The art’s focus on control, leverage, and non-lethal restraint makes it particularly suited for arrest scenarios where minimizing injury is critical. Programs like “Gracie Survival Tactics” in the U.S. have formalized BJJ-based curriculum for officers.

Advocates argue that BJJ reduces reliance on striking or weapons and improves officer confidence in de-escalation. Some cities, such as Marietta, Georgia, have reported fewer use-of-force incidents after implementing mandatory BJJ training, reinforcing its effectiveness in policing contexts.
