Kids in BJJ
Although BJJ began as a primarily adult-focused practice, children’s programs developed as the art became more structured in the late 20th century. Early Gracie academies included lessons for kids, emphasizing discipline, self-defense, and confidence building. Over time, structured curriculums with kid-specific belts and rankings were introduced, creating a pathway for young practitioners to progress through the art.
Today, kids’ BJJ programs are central to most academies, often serving as both a financial foundation for gyms and a pipeline for developing future champions. Competitions for children are now widespread, and many of the sport’s rising stars began training as early as age four or five. This generational shift ensures that BJJ will continue evolving as athletes who grew up immersed in the art bring unprecedented levels of skill and creativity.
