BJJ Belt System Evolution

The belt system in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has undergone significant evolution since its adoption from judo. Early on, promotions were informal and varied widely, with some students training for decades before achieving higher ranks. As BJJ academies grew and the sport spread internationally, a more standardized ranking system emerged.

Today, adult belts progress from white to blue, purple, brown, and black, with additional degrees recognizing long-term contributions and teaching. Children’s belts were later introduced, providing structured progression for younger practitioners. In recent years, debates have emerged over criteria for promotion, with some schools emphasizing competition results and others prioritizing technical knowledge or teaching ability. The evolving belt system reflects the tension between tradition, sport, and modern pedagogy within BJJ.
