Weight Shifting Principles

Weight shifting involves adjusting body weight strategically to maintain balance, destabilize the opponent, or set up attacks. Smooth weight shifts allow the practitioner to transition between positions while controlling the opponent’s reactions.

This principle is central to sweeps, guard passes, and escapes. By moving weight subtly and deliberately, a practitioner can manipulate leverage and timing, making techniques more effective while conserving energy. Weight shifting demonstrates how dynamic body control underpins nearly every high-level grappling movement.
