Gi vs. No-Gi Competition Rules

While the fundamentals of scoring are similar, gi and no-gi competitions differ significantly in grips, submissions, and attire. In the gi, athletes can use lapels, sleeves, and collars for control and submissions. No-gi, by contrast, emphasizes clinching, underhooks, and leg entanglements due to the lack of gripping material.

Some organizations apply stricter leg lock restrictions in gi competitions, while no-gi divisions often allow a wider range of submissions at lower ranks. Competitors should tailor their strategies and training to match the rule set of their chosen event.
