International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF)
The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) is the premier governing body for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu worldwide. Founded in 2002 by Carlos Gracie Jr., the IBJJF established standardized rules, weight classes, and belt ranking criteria for both gi and no-gi competition. Its oversight has helped professionalize the sport, creating a consistent framework for tournaments internationally.
The IBJJF organizes flagship events such as the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, and European Open, drawing thousands of competitors from across the globe. Its events are known for strict rule enforcement, formalized scoring systems, and professional production quality, making them a benchmark for competitive BJJ.
Beyond competition, the IBJJF plays a key role in certifying instructors, regulating academies, and supporting the growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a recognized martial art. Through its network, the federation continues to influence BJJ’s evolution, standardization, and global expansion.
