Straight Ankle Lock / Toe Hold / Toe Hold Variation
The straight ankle lock attacks the Achilles tendon and ankle joint by controlling the opponent’s foot and applying leverage through the attacker’s hips. It is a foundational leg lock in both gi and no-gi competition, often used from guard, open guard, or top positions. Proper foot and shin placement are essential to generate torque and prevent escapes.
The toe hold is a complementary foot lock that twists the toes toward the shin to create pressure on the ankle and knee ligaments. Variations involve adjusting grips, leg positioning, or angles to improve control and finishing potential. Both submissions are often linked with other lower-body attacks such as heel hooks or calf crushers, forming comprehensive leg-lock systems.
