Cross Collar Choke / Cross Collar from Guard

The cross collar choke is a classic gi submission where the attacker grips the opponent’s collar with both hands, creating a figure-four configuration to compress the neck and restrict blood flow. From closed guard, this choke is particularly effective, as the attacker can control posture while applying gradual pressure.

The mechanics rely on proper angles and snug lapel control, using the arms and shoulders to tighten the choke without relying on brute strength. From guard, the attacker can subtly adjust hip positioning to increase leverage, making it extremely effective against resisting opponents.

Cross collar chokes are foundational in gi BJJ because they serve both as a submission and a positional control tool. Beyond the direct tap threat, they can force the opponent to open their guard, enabling sweeps, armbar setups, or transitions to mounted attacks. Its versatility makes it a staple in the arsenals of gi-focused competitors.
