Twister / Twister from Back Control
The twister is a spinal lock that rotates the opponent’s torso by controlling the head and body, creating torque on the spine and neck. When applied from back control, it combines hooks and torso rotation to maintain tight control while threatening a high-risk submission. This technique is less common in sport BJJ but has gained prominence in no-gi competitions and submission grappling formats.
Because of its complexity and potential for injury, the twister is considered an advanced submission. Proper body positioning and timing are essential to prevent escapes and maximize control, and it is often used in combination with positional transitions or attacks to the arms and legs.
