Lapel Choke from Open Guard / Loop Choke

Lapel-based chokes like the lapel choke from open guard and the loop choke leverage the gi to restrict blood flow and induce a tap. The attacker loops the opponent’s collar around their neck and uses body mechanics and angles to compress the carotids, often setting up from dynamic open guard positions.

The loop choke is particularly effective against opponents who posture up in guard, as it combines lapel control with precise hip movement to finish the choke. Variations include adjustments in grip placement, looping technique, and body angle to maximize pressure while minimizing escape options.

These chokes illustrate the gi’s role in expanding BJJ’s technical possibilities, allowing submissions that blend control, leverage, and creativity. High-level competitors frequently chain lapel chokes with sweeps, guard passes, or transitions to arm locks, maintaining continuous pressure on their opponents.
