Side Control Escape — Bridge and Roll / Bridge and Turn
Bridging escapes from side control rely on explosive hip movement to disrupt the top opponent’s base. In the bridge and roll escape, the bottom player drives the hips upward and toward the opponent, using the momentum to roll them over and reverse positions. The bridge and turn variation emphasizes turning toward the opponent while bridging, which allows the defender to slip an underhook or insert a knee to recover guard. Timing is critical, as initiating the bridge too early or without controlling an arm can allow the opponent to maintain heavy pressure or counter with submissions like armbars or kimuras.
