Back Escape — Roll to Guard / Roll Under Defense

Rolling toward the trapped side or under the opponent is another effective method for back recovery. Rolling toward the opponent allows the defender to break hook control and create angles for guard recovery, while rolling under the opponent’s body shifts weight distribution to relieve back pressure. Both techniques demand awareness of the opponent’s arms and hooks to prevent being caught in a tighter submission during the roll.

These escapes highlight the dynamic nature of BJJ defense, where movement, timing, and body awareness combine to counter dominant positions. Practitioners often chain these rolls with hip escapes or grip breaks to maximize the chance of safe positional recovery.
